I’m really sad that this weekend has come and gone. I had such a wonderful time back home in Waco celebrating Mother’s day and my sister coming back to the states.
I honestly can’t believe it’s already been almost a year since she left.
Before she left for Melbourne, we lived together for two years, and it was absolutely amazing. Before that, we hadn’t lived in the same city since I was in high school and we were both back at home. While I was (and am) so glad that she got to have this amazing life experience, it was really hard for me when she left. I realized that I hadn’t spent a lot of time cultivating my own friendships and really had relied on her for my social life. Even more so when I quit drinking.
So as hard as it was, it was really good for me to branch out of my comfort zone. But I’m really really happy that she’s home.
I took Friday off of work, and headed home to Waco Thursday evening. As happy as she was to see us, I think my sister Brentye was even happier to see Stevie Ticks.
My dad made us our favorite meal of Salmon Croquettes, which was perfect for our first family meal together in a year.
I caught up with our family cockatoo, Hoagie-and made friends with one of my dad’s new baby chicks-Quail. The cockatoo is really sweet but slightly disabled, and it can also be the most annoying animal on the planet. If it hears ANYONE in the house it squawks repeatedly until it gets some attention. The chicks though, they make the cutest little chirps, and I could listen to them all day long.
We spent the next few days eating good good, relaxing in the beautiful weather, and snuggling and watching movies. It felt just like old times.
We found a pair of dog clippers and decided it was time for Stevie Ticks to get a hair cut. It went surprisingly well, given my skills, with the exception of a few bald patches on her back. She seems pretty happy about it anyway. All in all, it was a pretty perfect weekend. I got a lot of joy of watching my dad try to get along with Stevie, who for some reason hates him. We watched some terrible movies, went on some lovely runs, and had some long conversations with my grandmother.
On Sunday morning, my dad, sister and I woke up early to prepare Mother’s day brunch for my family. We made tuna and pimento cheese sandwiches and a delicious fruit salad. I don’t usually make it home for Mother’s day, so I was really happy to be able to spend this one with both my mother and my grandmother, who will be turning 90 in less than a month! We had to pretty much tie her up to keep her from trying to cook and clean on her own. I swear, this woman is so inspiring.
And now we’re back to Monday! I’m feeling in much better spirits already this week, and think that my weekend home was exactly what I needed. Before I left, I was feeling quite burnt out and now I feel refreshed and full of love.
My sister is staying with Matt and I for a few days this week, and this excites me more than I can even express. I’m writing this Sunday evening, and I’m heading out to judge the semi-finals of the “Funniest Person in Austin” contest, and Brentye is coming as my date!
Hope you all have a wonderful Monday! Hugs to everyone!
